PINEWOOD,THE AMERICAN INT'L SCHOOL OF THESSALONIKI

The Pinewood American International School - Thessaloniki is an independent, non-profit school that offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 and boarding facilities from grade 7 through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The elementary school was founded in 1950, and the secondary school was established in 1962. The school year comprises two semesters extending from September to June.

Organization: The School is governed by an 11-member School Board. Regular members of the Corporation, which includes all parents who have children enrolled in the School, as well as special members (the director and faculty), elect 8 of the 11 members to the Board for 2-year terms. The School is incorporated in the United States under the laws of the State of Delaware and has been designated as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory public schools. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program was added in September 1999. The School’s testing program includes the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying tests. Instruction is in English. Greek and French are taught as foreign languages. Ninety percent of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States and other countries. The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Faculty: In the 2010-2011 school year, there are 22 full-time and 8 part-time faculty members.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, enrollment was 190.

Facilities: As of August 2008 the school relocated to a new campus in Thermi. The newly renovated facility provides more space for students and faculty. The School possesses adequate and well-maintained facilities, including a chemistry/biology laboratory, a gymnasium/auditorium, a library/audio-visual center, and a technology laboratory.

Finances: In the 2010-2011 school year, about 90% of the Schools' income derives from regular day school tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: €6,300; Kdg.: €6,700; grades 1-5: €10,300; and grades 6-12: €10,600. The School also charges a one-time capital levy for new students of €1,800, and an activity/field trip fee of €250 for prekindergarten and kindergarten and €370 for grades 1-12. Boarding costs for grades 7-12 are €11,900. These fees are payable Euros or U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in Euros).
