Def Leppard Drummer Loses An Arm

1984
Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen loses an arm when he crashes his Corvette. He continues with the band, using computer aids and relying more on his feet.

Allen is out for a cruise in his Corvette Stingray with his Dutch girlfriend, Miriam Barendsen, when he agrees to a late afternoon, New Year's Eve race with another driver in an Alpha Romeo. The two classic sports cars ravage a fateful stretch of A57 outside of Sheffield when Allen's Corvette suddenly swerves in a sharp bend and goes through a dry stone wall. As Allen's Corvette collides with the wall, he is ejected from the vehicle and his left arm is torn off by the safety belt, which is improperly fastened. Surgeons fight desperately to save Allen's left arm, but his injuries are so severe that for a while, the fate of both of his arms are in question. The left arm is reattached initially, but it gets infected and the wounded limb has to be re-amputated. Allen's career is in jeopardy, but with the encouragement of his bandmates, he single-handedly beats the odds, returning to action behind an electronic Simmons kit modified with foot pedals. After a few warm-up gigs, he returns to action at the 1986 Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donington, England. With his return, the band can finally finish work on their Hysteria album, which is released in 1987.
