Inside the Emmys: What You Didn’t See on Television
Game of Thrones and Chernobyl might have won their own major prizes, but the biggest winner of Emmy night by far was Fleabag, which swept past expected front-runner Veep to take home four comedy prizes, including best comedy series. But if you were in the room, you might have seen the Fleabag sweep coming: Both Julie Miller and Joy Press, who attended the Emmys for Vanity Fair, reported huge bursts of applause when Phoebe Waller-Bridge won her first award of the night, suggesting widespread support for the Amazon series. The only person who got a bigger cheer? When They See Us star Jharrel Jerome, who won for best lead actor in a limited series.
Elsewhere in this special morning-after-Emmys edition of HWD Daily, you can catch up on the best looks from the Emmy red carpet; ponder the Emmy record that, as Joanna Robinson points out, Game of Thrones came this close to breaking; join Richard Lawson in marveling over Fox’s brazen and endless Masked Singer promotion; and read Sonia Saraiya’s take on the chaotic night that, thanks to Fleabag’s series of wins, managed some very pleasant surprises.
