The Peace Islamic Center in Burke, Virginia, could not accommodate the large numbers of people who wanted to come for prayers. This year, the center arranged to hold a large gathering at nearby St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church for the annual Eid celebration .

On August 22, 1950, tennis great Althea Gibson became the first African-American player accepted to the United States Lawn Tennis Association’ annual tennis tournament in Forest Hills, New York. Gibson was born in Harlem in 1927 and showed athletic promise early in life. She won her first tournament at the age of 14. By the time she retired in 1958, she’d won 56 national and international tennis titles.
As American students head into a new school year , a shortage of teachers — which reached a 10-year low in 2016 — is a major problem for an increasing number of U.S. states. In some states, the greatest needs are for teachers of special education, science and math. In others, schools are not finding enough qualified language teachers .
Following Seoul’s announcement that South Korean companies have illegally imported North Korean coal, U.S. experts are worried about North Korean trade that contravenes international sanctions. The U.N. Security Council adopted the sanctions on August 5, 2017, which banned North Korea from exporting coal, iron, lead and other materials. The illegal coal was reportedly transshipped through Russian ports.
VIDEO: He played more than 300 games in his professional career , but NHL goalie Clint Malarchuk is best remembered for only one – a game that almost killed him. It happened on March 22, 1989, in a game against the St. Louis Blues. Malarchuk, on goal, was sliced on the neck by another player’s errant skate, severing his jugular vein. He survived, just as he later survived depression and a suicide attempt.
