On August 22, 1950, tennis great Althea Gibson became the first African-American player accepted to the United States Lawn Tennis Association’ annual tennis tournament in Forest Hills, New York. Gibson was born in Harlem in 1927 and showed athletic promise early in life. She won her first tournament at the age of 14. By the time she retired in 1958, she’d won 56 national and international tennis titles.
