On August 20, 1911, the first round-the-world telegram was sent. The message “this message sent around the world,” was sent by the New York Times to see how fast a telegram could travel around the entire globe. After passing through San Francisco, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Saigon, Singapore, Bombay, Malta, Lisbon and the Azores and others, the message arrived back in New York in 16.5 minutes later. |
