Golden Record Goes Into Space

1977
The Voyager 2 space probe is launched, carrying with it a "Golden Record" of sounds and images representing Earth.

Along with greetings in 55 languages, traditional songs from around the world are included, as well as pieces from Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. Representing rock is Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode."

On the cover contains instructions on how to play the record, and a stylus is included along with it. This shows what direction it should spin, and that it should start from the outside. Binary arithmetic indicates the speed at which it should be played: 3.6 seconds per one rotation.

On September 5, the Voyager 1 probe (yes, they launched out of order) goes into space with a copy of the Golden Record.
