The Phantom Of The Opera Makes Its Broadway Debut
1988
Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster musical The Phantom of the Operadebuts on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre two years after a successful run on London's West End.
Lloyd Webber's musical take on Gaston Leroux's 1910 French novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, directed and choreographed by Harold Prince, casts his wife Sarah Brightman as enchanting soprano Christine Daaé, who falls under the spell of the disfigured musician (Michael Crawford) who haunts the Paris Opera House.
Songs from Lloyd Webber and up-and-coming lyricist Charles Hart like "Think of Me," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You" form the backdrop of The Phantom's pursuit of Christine and his plot against Raoul, his rival for Christine's affections. Lloyd Webber also employed segments of fictional operatic pieces in the manner of composers like Mozart for the characters' performances at the Opera House.
For theatergoers who were only familiar with The Phantom of the Opera through the silver screen's horror adaptations years before (the most famous being the silent era classic with Lon Chaney, aka the "Man of a Thousand Faces," in the lead role), the musical is like nothing they had ever imagined, and critics agree. The show wins four Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Crawford), Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Judy Kaye as prima donna Carlotta) and Best Direction of a Musical.
In February 2012, it celebrates its 10,000th performance, making The Phantom of the Operathe longest-running show in Broadway history.
