Unpacking a Very Odd Oscars

Even before Will Smith stormed the stage, Vanity Fair chief critic Richard Lawson writes, the 2022 Oscars ceremony felt a bit...off, perhaps because several Oscar categories were announced before the live telecast began. “The live awards were dealt out at a clip, and the producers tried to trick home viewers into thinking the omitted eight categories were actually being presented live—which of course wasn’t the case,” he writes. The evening’s winners, though, did break through some of the peculiarity: “Best-supporting-actor winner Troy Kotsur’s heartfelt speech was a highlight of the evening, as was Yuh-Jung Youn’s presenter bit. Drive My Car stands as testament to the fact that international films have a path from the art-house, international festival circuit to the galactic center of Hollywood worship. Ariana DeBose became the first openly queer acting winner ever, while Jane Campion became only the third woman to ever win best director.”

Elsewhere at the Oscars (and after!), Smith tries to explain his outburst at Chris Rock during his acceptance speech; the stars align in Mark Seliger’s Vanity Fair Oscar party portrait studio and mingle at the party itself; and, for those who want a full rundown of every moment of Oscar night, Vanity Fair’s live blog has the answers.
