Introducing President Fran Drescher
Fran Drescher has been through a lot since The Nanny’s six-year run in the ’90s: cancer, congressional lobbying, serving as a U.S. State Department public diplomacy envoy for health. Now, though, she’s taking on an even greater challenge: leadership of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which elected Drescher as its next president in September. “All of the Zen masters say don’t try and swim upstream, just let life come to you,” Drescher recently told Joy Press. “When this came to me as an opportunity to run, I really thought, This seems to be an amalgam of many of my strengths and accomplishments coming to a point in this one defining moment.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Rebecca Ford interviews the female cinematographers working to break one of Hollywood’s most pernicious glass ceilings; Cassie da Costa reviews Living, one of the best films at Sundance this year; Arden Fanning Andrews examines the televised revival of flossing; and Miriam Elder speaks with filmmaker Megan Mylan about her searing new documentary.
