Ziggy Stardust Is Televised
1972David Bowie performs "Starman" on Top Of The Pops, causing an uproar among the conservative British audience by singing with his arm coquettishly draped around the shoulder of guitarist Mick Ronson – a move that makes him as a household name overnight.
Bowie had appeared on the popular music show before, doing "Space Oddity" in 1969 and playing piano on Peter Noone's performance of a song Bowie wrote, "Oh! You Pretty Things," in 1971. But this time is different. Bowie had spent lots of time curating his Ziggy Stardust character, who makes quite a fashion statement with an array of colorful patterns set against Bowie's pale complexion.
In June, Ziggy is ready to go and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars is released. His TOTP performance is for most the first look at the character, and it leaves an impression. When Bowie sings, "I had to phone someone so I picked on you," he looks right at the camera and points. A rock star move if there ever was one.
