School is back in session! Today, HWD talks to Gossip Girlproducer Joshua Safran about returning to Constance Billard school with a hipper set of rich kids, like the freshly buzzed Calloway (Jordan Alexander), the tree-hugging Otto (Eli Brown), and the pink-haired Aki (Evan Mock). There are openly queer characters, and more people of color in the central cast this time around, not to mention a hapless teacher played by Tavi Gevinson. Says Safran, “It was very important, if you’re doing a show about power and privilege, to actually look at how that affects all people, whether you’re queer, whether you’re black, whether you’re older—that’s really what we wanted Gossip Girl to do this time around, because Gossip Girl herself is the great leveler.”

Elsewhere in HWD, we dig into the buzzed-about Cannes film Blue Bayou, and look back at how reliable the audience response at the festival has been in Oscar races past; Cassie da Costa weighs in on HBO’s limited series The White Lotus;and Faye Dunaway joins Kevin Spacey in his first movie since multiple allegations of sexual assault were made against him.
