Today in HWD, V.F.’s chief critic, Richard Lawson, writes, “The true pleasure of Cannes—beyond nightly swims in its rivers of rosé—is seeing the latest from some of the most interesting filmmakers working around the world.” The legendary festival is back after being canceled last year due to COVID. The movies on offer, as always, are varied and often seriously intriguing: a musical with Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, a drama with Matt Damon, and a fictional biopic loosely inspired by Céline Dion. Lawson walks us through the dozen movies he’s most eager to see.
Elsewhere in HWD, we are sorry to report that the new Gossip Girl launches not with a bang but a whimper; David Canfielddeconstructs the Emmys’ best-comedy category; Padma Lakshmi calls for an investigation into a Top Chef winner; and the beloved director Richard Donner has passed away at 91.
