Cannes 2021 Isn’t a Major Oscar Launchpad—Yet

Festivals are back! And with that, extremely premature Oscar buzz—my favorite time of the year!

I’m David Canfield, and you’re catching Awards Insider this week playing a major case of double duty: We’re gearing up for Tuesday’s Emmy nominations, breaking down all of the major categories and studios vying for recognition—be sure to check out our very comprehensive staff predictions—while also closely tracking the starriest, buzziest in-person film festival to take place since COVID-19 hit last year. Vanity Faircritic Richard Lawson is on the ground in Cannes with coverage of the biggest premieres so far—thumbs-down, Annette; big thumbs-up, Souvenir sequel!—and, inevitably, some increasingly loud murmurs about where some of the festival’s more awards-bound titles go from here.

But let’s be honest: There isn’t a ton to report in that department right now. Star wattage and all, the esoteric Annette was never really going to be an awards movie—has no one seen a Leos Carax film before?—and that impression has certainly held up in the wake of its muted opening-night screening. Oscar-winning Spotlight filmmaker Tom McCarthyis finally back with a new prestige player in Stillwater, but the French-set thriller—while well-liked by a decent chunk of audiences—won’t likely be to Academy tastes, even if star Matt Damon may get a run. As I outline in a story about Cannes’s limits as a campaign launchpad, there’s plenty of attention paid to standing ovations and walkouts at Cannes, but the movies usually speak for themselves. (As do their release dates: Both of those aforementioned titles will come and go by the end of summer.) That said, there’s still plenty more to come.

Meanwhile, in Emmy world, questions surrounding the performance of nascent streamers and a boatload of freshmen contenders loom ahead of next week’s long-awaited noms morning. We get into all of that this week in Awards Insider, and much more. So join us on the Croisette from wherever you may be, get caught up on what chaos Tuesday will bring, and start reading. You heard it here first: Awards season is heating up.
