Amy Duggar King became famous more than a decade ago, alongside her cousins, on the TLC docuseries 19 Kids and Counting; Amy was the “rebellious,” “wild” cousin to the ultraconservative Duggar clan, raised by Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar in the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) Christian movement. In the new Amazon Prime Video series Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, Duggar King is an essential voice, speaking out against the beliefs she believed damaged her family, and enabled her cousin Josh Duggar’s particularly damaging behavior. She told VFcontributor Kait Hanson about her decision to speak out against her own family: “It was just like, ‘Do we close our eyes and act like it’s not happening?’ Or do we say, ‘It’s happening and here’s the atomic bomb,’ and let the pieces fall where they may?”
