The People v. Janet Jackson
Nine sixteenths of a second. That’s how long it took to turn Janet Jackson from global pop icon into the most controversial woman in America—a strange chapter in recent history that’s examined fully in the upcoming FX and Hulu documentary Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson. In retrospect, director Jodi Gomes and executive producer Mary Robertson tell Chris Murphy, the strangest part of the entire saga was the amount of culpability heaped onto Jackson while her Super Bowl halftime partner (and the person who actually ripped off Jackson’s top), Justin Timberlake, got off scot-free. As Robertson put it: “It was as if her breast exposed itself.”
