Watching Seinfeld in the 21st Century

Now that Seinfeld is streaming on Netflix, a whole new audience is discovering why it’s been declared one of the best TV series of all time—while its original fans have an opportunity to reconsider its innovations and flaws. “Seinfeld is like the anti-binge show, a series very much designed to be watched amid all the other crap on TV on a Thursday night,” writes one of themSonia Saraiya. “In single half-hour chunks, its characters are like a balm, implicitly forgiving you for every unkind word you’ve considered saying, for every time you ranked getting laid over showing up for your loved ones. But for more than a few episodes at a time, these people and their concerns—so self-absorbed, so entitled, so stupid—are a little deadening to watch.”

Elsewhere in HWD, Will Smith remembers his surprise audition for the show that would become The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in an exclusive excerpt from his new memoir; Hadley Hall Meares dives into Christopher Plummer’s own wicked autobiographyNicholas Braun analyzes what makes Cousin Greg tick on the new episode of our Still Watching: Successionpodcast; and Anna Baryshnikov reveals whether her father, Mikhail, will cameo in HBO Max’s upcoming Sex and the Cityrevival.
