VIDEO: Ebola is again spreading quickly in several African countries, with the Democratic Republic of Congo in particular peril. VOA’s Plugged In traveled with U.S. health officials in mid-September to the epicenter of the outbreak, along the country’s remote northeast border. The U.S.-led delegation brought hope and medicine to the region, but serious challenges remain.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On October 3, 1995, former American football star, spokesman and actor O.J. Simpson is found not guilty of the 1994 double murder of his estranged wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. The trial lasted 252 days and captivated the nation as his “dream team” of lawyers were able to cast doubt about his guilt. A civil trial three years later found Simpson responsible for the murders, and he was ordered to pay over $33 million to the families. Very little of that money has been paid.
U.S. security officials are not laughing at the latest comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Kremlin’s attempts to interfere in U.S. elections.
The Ukrainian president’s support for a deal with pro-Russian rebels that would introduce a special status for Ukraine’s breakaway regions drew both outrage and praise across the nation Wednesday.
The United States and other countries hoping to deal the Islamic State terror group an enduring defeat risk failure by ignoring the tens of thousands of fighters, women and children stuck in prisons or camps across northeastern Syria, key U.S. officials warn.
For decades, Interpol, the France-based global police network, has played a critical role in fighting crime across international borders. But the same agency that has helped catch thousands of criminals is increasingly being exploited by authoritarian regimes such as Russia and Turkey to harass their political enemies who live in exile.
