ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY AND AWARD NEWS
The New Hollywood
The year 2019 may become known as the turning point when everyone in Hollywood joined the streaming wars, but for now, Netflix sits on top. As does Ted Sarandos, who is first on Vanity Fair’s rundown of the New Hollywood for this year’s New Establishment list. As the list puts it, “In the streaming wars, Sarandos is a general under siege, but with 151 million paid subscribers, his position appears to be strong and defensible—for now.” The list also includes several of the name-brand talents to sign massive deals with Netflix—Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, and Janet Mock—who may help Sarandos fend off big-name competition in the years to come. There’s one crown Netflix can’t have, though. In the list’s ranking of the most valuable IP in Hollywood, Disney—home of Marvel, Star Wars, Toy Story, The Simpsons, and Avatar—can’t be beat.
Elsewhere in HWD, Yohana Desta looks at Richard Jewell,Clint Eastwood’s last-minute arrival in awards season, Richard Lawson reviews the Natalie Portmanastronaut drama Lucy in the Sky, and Laura Bradleyfinds the late-night hosts as baffled as the rest of America by Donald Trump’s proposed gator moat. And over in Vanities, Erin Vanderhoof talks to Radiolab co-host Jad Abumrad about his new podcast project, Dolly Parton’s America, which aims to answer the eternal question: How is Dolly Parton the one person every American can agree on?
