The announcement confirmed what most prognosticators suspected: that Game of Thrones, which recently wrapped up its final season on HBO, would dominate the proceedings. The fantasy juggernaut’s divisive eighth season nabbed 32 nominations in total; according to the TV Academy, that is the most for any program in a single season in television history. It was followed by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel(which got 20 nominations), Chernobyl (at 19), Saturday Night Live (18), Barry (17), Fosse/Verdon (17), and When They See Us (16).
