Enter Tracy Morgan’s Brooklyn
Months ago, TV critic Sonia Saraiya paid a visit to the set of The Last O.G., the TBS comedy starring Tracy Morganas an ex-con who returns to his home neighborhood in Brooklyn after 15 years in jail—only to find that it’s been overrun by green juice-loving hipster millennials like, well, Saraiya herself, who literally lives on the block where the show was shooting the day she stopped by. Ahead of the show’s second-season premiere tonight, Saraiya recounts her conversations with Morgan and his co-star Tiffany Haddish, which were both uproarious and thoughtful—like when Haddish noted that her character, Shannon, is no longer interested in Morgan’s character, Tray, even though the two were together before Tray went to jail. “He’s not even her type no more,” Haddish told Saraiya, before crowing about Ryan Gaul, who plays her character’s husband. “I mean, look at Josh’s body!” (Gaul was shirtless for a scene Saraiya saw shot; “I can confirm that he has a six-pack,” she writes.) When confronted with Haddish’s crack, Morgan—who, like his co-star, grew up poor—replied with both amusement and a surprising intensity: “That’s just her tryin’ to body-diss me,” he said. “This is how I respond to Tiffany: The only muscle I need is my wallet. That’s the biggest muscle on me at this point in my life . . . that’s the only muscle I need to be in shape.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Paul Chi chats with Emerald Fennell, who will play Camilla Parker Bowles on the next season of The Crown; Joanna Robinson gives a helpful rundown of who will be fighting with what when Game of Thrones returns in less than two weeks; Nicole Sperling gets the scoop on Mark Boal’s 2016 election-themed TV show; and Saraiya has disappointing news for anyone excited about journeying back into The Twilight Zone.
