Let’s Dive into Game of Thrones Season 8

Dragons! Zombies! Jon’s true parentage! Daenerys’s amazing white fur coat! Bran’s creepy stare! All these things and more took center stage when Game of Thrones finally, finally returned for its eighth and final season, in an epic episode stuffed with long-awaited reunions, snarky conversations, and Hall of Fame reaction shots. (Although, alas, there were no elephants; sorry, Cersei.) So much happened that you’d need a learned maester to break down everything—and thankfully, V.F. has you covered, thanks to intrepid Thrones-ologist Joanna Robinson. She’s helpfully dissected every aspect of the premiere, from the biggest details (those brand-new opening credits, which are stuffed with Easter eggs and references) to the smallest (how Season 8 is saying goodbye to the poor Lannister soldier played by Ed Sheeran, who apparently met an ignominious offscreen end).
