VIDEO: The Russia probe is America’s reality television show. It has all of the hallmarks of a political thriller: a controversial president, an enigmatic special counsel, even an adult-film star. Ahead of Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin later this month, Americans are divided on the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, with most Trump supporters believing the probe is not being conducted fairly.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On July 10, 1999, the largest crowd ever to attend a women’s sporting event watches the US women’s soccer team defeat China to win the Women’s World Cup. After 120 scoreless minutes, the game comes down to a 5-4 shootout. The match is played at California’s Rose Bowl with more than 90,000 fans on hand to watch the American team win its second Women’s World Cup. The Pentagon is assessing two military bases to house migrant families. The Trump administration has asked the military to shelter thousands of undocumented migrants, including unaccompanied children who illegally crossed the US southern border. Standard migrant shelters are subject to state licensing requirements, but facilities on federal property, including military bases, are not, which allows the Trump administration to bypass lengthy licensing requirements.
VIDEO EXPLAINER: Competitive eating is a thing in the United States. The aim is to see who can eat the most food in a limited time. An American named Joey Chestnut just set a competitive eating record after eating 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
Whenever Olga Robertson, 84, feels lonely, she can turn to Rudy the robot. ‘You can have a conversation with him,’ the great-grandmother says. ‘ He’s somebody you talk to and he responds.’ Rudy also provides entertainment; he tells jokes, plays games and dances the jitterbug.
StoryCorps: For 18 years Rocco was the owner and superintendent of a New York apartment building where much of his family lived, until the day they were given notice that their building was being torn down to make way for new development. As his grandson remembers, the destruction of the building led to the end of their family as he knew it.
