President Trump’s 25 percent tariff on steel imports is putting the squeeze on a US can manufacturer not far from the nation’s capital. The Independent Can Company, the largest manufacturer of specialty tins in the United States, buys domestic but also relies on a global steel supply chain to stay afloat. Company officials worry its clients will turn to foreign can makers if its prices rise too high.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On July 11, 1804, former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton is mortally wounded in a duel with US Vice President Aaron Burr. Hamilton, an American founding father who established the nation’s financial system, is challenged to a duel of honor after he campaigns against Burr, who is running for governor of New York. Hamilton, who is in his late forties, dies one day after being shot. (Drawing of Burr-Hamilton duel by unknown illustrator from a J. Mund painting.)

The administration is considering the rule, which could have sweeping effects on both legal immigration to the United States and the use of public benefits by legal immigrants and their families. The move could keep US citizens in mixed-status families from seeking crucial services out of fear that it could jeopardize a relative’s immigration status.
What’s the fastest growing cuisine in the United States? Between 1999 and 2015, sales of this type of fast food soared 135 percent, far outpacing Latin and Middle Eastern cuisines. Its popularity began to grow after 1965, with the passage of a new law that opened the door to many immigrants from this particular region.
