Explore the Lost Lives of Pompeii 🌋 |
In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius famously erupted and destroyed the city of Pompeii and its neighbour, Herculaneum. The city was buried in motion alongside its inhabitants, and the incredible preservation of its ruins provide an invaluable snapshot of everyday life in the Roman world.
Last June, History Hit jetted off to Pompeii to film a brand new documentary on Pompeii. Given special access before the doors opened, we spent 2 days in the ancient city itself, visiting sites such as the forum, the brothel, the gladiator barracks, and a particular highlight of mine, the amphitheatre. |
Ancients expert Tristan Hughes said: “Walking around what is one of the oldest known amphitheatres in the Roman world, I could only imagine what it must have been like in its heyday, as thousands of spectators bayed for blood in the stands.
After meandering the streets of Pompeii, we spent another day exploring the mighty volcano that destroyed it, Vesuvius, and also spent some time in the beautiful city of Naples. We've captured some incredible footage and spoken with expert historians.” |
