Lady Gaga storms US chart with Born This Way

Lady Gaga has topped the US Billboard 200 chart after her second full-length album Born This Way sold more than one million copies in its first week.

The US singer shifted 1,108,000 copies of the release which has already topped the official UK album chart.

She is only the 17th artist since US chart data began being tracked by Nielson SoundScan in 1991 to score more than a million sales in its first week.

The most recent one was Taylor Swift in November 2010.

Born This Way has become Lady Gaga's first US number one album. Her debut The Fame peaked at number two.

During the first week of release online retailer Amazon sold download MP3s of the album for 99 cents (approximately 60p) on two separate days.

US magazine Billboard has reported that Amazon was understood to be responsible for around 440,000 downloads of the album which shifted 662,000 digital copies in total.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way has secured the biggest first week sales of an album since 50 Cent's The Massacre in March 2005, which sold 1,141,000 during its first seven days on sale.

The singer also released an EP, The Fame Monster, in 2009 that contained singles like Telephone and Alejandro.
