“The noose is tightening around Barry.” That’s how Barrycocreator Bill Hader describes the beginning of his show’s third season, which debuts on HBO on April 24 following a long, pandemic-induced delay. With time to rework the third season during COVID shutdowns—and write the fourth season, to boot—Hader and his cocreator, Alec Berg, resume the dark Los Angeles–set comedy six months after the dramatic revelations at the end of season two. On this week’s episode of Little Gold Men, Hader tells Vanity Fair’s Hillary Busis about resuming with Barry “at a loss” for what to do next—and forcing famously friendly Henry Winkler to confront the darker sides of his acting-teacher character, Gene.
