Yes, We Cannes |
The Cannes Film Festival has yielded some particularly captivating movies of late, chief among them Drive My Carand Parasite. Today, V.F. chief critic Richard Lawson pores over the newly announced lineup for the 75th annual fest, which begins on May 17. As he writes, “Recent Cannes smashes have relied more on singular auteurist vision and excited word-of-mouth than traditional, bold-name marketing blitzes. Which is exactly the kind of launchpad that Cannes ideally should be, a showroom for some the world’s most interesting cinema whose wares gleam and entice from even thousands of miles away.” This year, directors in the main competition lineup will include Palme d’Or–winning Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, hero of the Romanian New Wave Cristian Mungiu, and Japanese humanist Hirokazu Kore-eda. And some extremely shiny and promising movies will screen outside of competition, like Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick, and George Miller’s fantasy romance Three Thousand Years of Longing. We’re in. Who’s got sunscreen? |
