These Are the Oscar Hopefuls You’re Going to See Everywhere

Say hello to my new friends! And by friends, I mean Oscar hopefuls that we’ll be seeing at every event for the next four months.

I’m Rebecca Ford and as awards season really begins to take shape, we’re getting a feel for who might be the actors and actresses that we’ll be seeing a lot of over the next few months. Some of them, as highlighted in Joe Reid’s latest piece for Vanity Fair, are very familiar faces who may finally get their due. Others are newer to Hollywood and doing this Oscar circuit for the first time. Plus, awards season often introduces not only new faces but also international stars to American audiences. Youn Yuh-jung, who won for Minari,Roma’s Marina de Tavira, and Babel’s Rinko Kikuchi are just a few examples of actors who have been revered for their work around the world, and finally got some attention from the Academy with an Oscar nomination.

This year’s slate should introduce audiences to several international talents. I recently spoke with one of them: Filippo Scotti, who stars in Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God.The 21-year-old plays a young man whose parents are killed in an accident, based on Sorrentino’s experience as a teen. “Paolo said this movie is about him, but it is about our story too because everyone has pain,” Scotti told me. Scotti has already been to Venice, Telluride, and San Sebastian with the film (along with a brief visit to the Academy Museum opening gala), and he’s just getting started.

And if you don’t know the name Anders Danielsen Lie, you probably will soon. My colleague David Canfield  spoke with the actor who, when he’s not starring in films like Bergman Island and The Worst Person in the World, is working as a doctor in his native Norway.

Whether it’s relative newcomers being introduced to the Hollywood scene or very familiar talent like those popping up at Vanity Fair’s New York Film Festival photo studio (DakotaJoaquinMaggie!), these actors are going to be hopping from film festival to panel to Academy screening to Oscar party all season long. And we’ll be there to cover it all.
