When Fandoms Turn Toxic
A long time ago, in a Hollywood far, far away, the fandoms generated by certain genre properties seemed intense, perhaps, but harmless. That’s certainly changed over the past 20 years, notes Anthony Breznican in the Y2K-themed September issue of Vanity Fair. “Now every franchise deals with a subset of ‘fans’ who see their devotion as a license to make threats, use racist and sexist language, and engage in Twitter dogpiles,” he writes. “Sometimes the negativity is fomented by influencers and media figures who want clout or clicks. But some admirers can also go radioactive if they don’t like the direction a story goes, or if an onscreen romance they’re hoping for never happens.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Whitney Friedlander surveys the preponderance of COVID-era TV shows that take place entirely at one (often exotic) location; Richard Lawsonreviews the newest of those programs, Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers; David Canfield chats with Maggie Gyllenhaalabout her feature directorial debut; and Emmy nominees Matt Shakman and Ben Richardson meet in the latest installmentof Awards Insider’s Reunited series. The Awards Insider team is also going live on Twitter on Thursday at 2 p.m.; listen in to have all of your burning Emmys questions answered.
