A GUIDE TO HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST RACES

AUGUST 27, 2021

Introducing Cyrano, The Power of the Dog,and More Future Festival Favorites

Let the rumor race begin!

With the trifecta of fall festivals—Venice, Telluride, Toronto—kicking off in less than a week, this is always the time of year when rumors start flying about which films are great, which films are good, and which films are going to disappoint.

The town is buzzing as some insiders, including members of the Awards Insider staff, have gotten to see a few films early (though we could never say which ones!). And while these rumors often prove false (remember the year when the early buzz insisted A Star Is Born was terrible?), they do signal that another exciting awards race is upon us.

I’m Rebecca Ford, and over at Awards Insider, we’ve got exclusive first looks and interviews for some of this year’s most promising and exciting films. My colleague David Canfield speaks with Jane Campion about The Power of the Dog, her first feature film in 12 years (and first ever with a male lead!). And while Joe Wright didn’t wait that long to make his latest movie, Cyrano, he tells Awards Insider that the musical feels like a return to his core: “There’s no cynicism in the movie, and I have to be quite brave to do that,” he says.

We also have an interview with Michael Showalter, director of The Eyes of Tammy Faye, who reveals his hopes that the film can redeem a trailblazing woman who undeservedly became a laughingstock. And Julia Ducournau talks to us in her first U.S. interview since winning the Cannes Palme d’Or in a history-making feat.

As we impatiently wait to see all these films and more at the festivals beginning next week, we’ve got plenty of Emmy coverage to hold us over until voting comes to a close on August 30. Our latest coverage includes a chat with the music supervisor of The Queen’s Gambit, a look back at Pose’sstunning makeup and hair, and a piece exploring how Drag Race succeeds in launching careers for its contestants more than any other reality competition.

Check it all out, and next week we’ll be coming at you from on the ground at Telluride!
