Make Gossip Girl Fun Again

As the HBO Max reboot of Gossip Girl presents the final installment of its first batch of episodes—the rest of season one will premiere in the fall—Delia Cai has just one question: Why isn’t this show any fun? The answer is slightly more complicated than one might think. “The old Gossip Girl thrilled by depicting the excesses of traditional privilege to soapy, often totally illogical extents,” she writes. And while the reboot is similarly obsessed with privilege, “it stops short of truly engaging with the accompanying concepts of power and elitism.”

Elsewhere in HWD, Tara Ariano reviews the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which finds the show at a George Floyd–inspired crossroads; Vanity Fair pitches a few ideas for The White Lotus season two; Cecily Strong digs into her most unhinged Saturday Night Live creations; and Anthony Breznican chats with Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levyabout their new video game-inspired popcorn flick, Free Guy.
