Make Gossip Girl Fun Again
As the HBO Max reboot of Gossip Girl presents the final installment of its first batch of episodes—the rest of season one will premiere in the fall—Delia Cai has just one question: Why isn’t this show any fun? The answer is slightly more complicated than one might think. “The old Gossip Girl thrilled by depicting the excesses of traditional privilege to soapy, often totally illogical extents,” she writes. And while the reboot is similarly obsessed with privilege, “it stops short of truly engaging with the accompanying concepts of power and elitism.”
