A GUIDE TO HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST RACES

AUGUST 20, 2021

Your Exclusive Fall-Festival Film Preview

Awards Insider is sworn to a certain level of secrecy, but over the past few weeks I’ve heard from several sources about some of the big names planning to land in Telluride in two weeks with their buzzy films. I’m David Canfield, and while I can’t say too much, the lineup sounds very exciting. This in addition to Benedict Cumberbatch himself accidentally leaking that he has two movies headed to the Rockies, revealed on BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball Breakfast Show. “Telluride is for both [The Electrical Life ofLouis Wain and The Power of the Dog,” he said earlier this week. (Hey, with this much excitement, it can be a hard secret to keep!)

For both of those films, this was the heavy speculation anyway—TIFF listing screenings of them as “Canadian premieres” instead of “North American premieres” suggested that a preceding Telluride stopover was all but assured. (In other words, the same logic likely applies to the Kristen Stewartvehicle Spencer and the Asghar Farhadi–helmed A Hero.) But nothing’s official until we get on the ground September 2, and as delta is proving, a lot can change quickly.

In any case, Vanity Fair will be in both Venice, the site of several confirmed major world premieres, and Telluride to ring in September. And starting this week, Awards Insider is rolling out a series of in-depth exclusives on some of the most intriguing films preparing to hit the circuit. On Wednesday we kicked off with a splashy first look at Maggie Gyllenhaal’s impressive directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, which Netflix acquired in tandem with its Venice world premiere slot. The movie stars Olivia Colman in maybe her biggest film role yet—yes, even though she’s a lead-actress Oscar winner—with Jessie Buckley and Dakota Johnson in key supporting roles. Safe to say Gyllenhaal announces herself as a filmmaker to watch here, with a gorgeous adapted screenplay to boot.

And we’re just getting started. Watch this space for the next few weeks, as there are plenty more first looks and exclusive interviews ahead, with the season starting to take shape. If there’s a movie you’re excited about, chances are Awards Insider’s got some intel on the way.

Meanwhile, over in TV land, voting for the Emmy winners has officially begun. We’ve resumed our State of the Streamers series post-Emmy nominations, including a look at Amazon Prime Video—with it having made some major category breakthroughs (including, most thrillingly, for The Boys) while falling behind in other areas—and started up some new ones. Plus, over on Little Gold Men, we’re even jumping into nextEmmy season, with a look at the recently concluded White Lotus—and just how many members of its brilliant ensemble can figure into the acting races. Never too early, right?
