Star Wars’ Gina Carano Conundrum

Weeks after the Great Baby Yoda Catastrophe of 2020, the Star Wars faithful are being rocked by a slightly more consequential issue: Gina Carano, a Mandalorian cast member who’s drawn criticism for her combative social media presence (and for signing up for an account on Parler, a platform populated by inflammatory figures like Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes). “We felt quite embarrassed for ourselves when Carano’s views became apparent,” one fan told Joanna Robinson and Anthony Breznican, for a deeply reported story on the controversy.

Elsewhere in HWD, Tracy Moore explains the trashy allure of Bravo’s Southern Charm; Richard Lawson notes one positive result of how the pandemic has upended 2020’s film-release schedule; Sonia Saraiya boards HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant; and Julie Miller goes deep with the serial-killer expert at the center of Alex Gibney’s new doc, Crazy, Not Insane.
