Matt Bomer’s Long, Strange Trip to Fellow Travelers |
Matt Bomer broke through for starring on the popular procedural TV show White Collar from 2009 to 2014. But if you’ve been paying attention more recently, Bomer has been taking on a variety of interesting roles—including starring in 2014’s The Normal Heart and appearing opposite Bradley Cooper in Maestro—that showcase more of his gifts and let him deliver some movingly vulnerable performances.
All of that work has led to Fellow Travelers, the Showtime limited series in which he stars as Hawkins Fuller, a State Department employee who hides his sexuality during the height of McCarthyism. The sweeping series spans from the 1950s to the 1980s, and at the center is the love story between Hawk and Tim (played by Jonathan Bailey). The two weave in and out of each other’s lives in this epic story told over eight episodes.

Bomer, who earned an Emmy nomination for lead actor in a limited series, says that while perhaps Fellow Travelers, a story centered on two gay men, could have been made a few years ago, the script would have never found its way to him. “Typically when you have these incredibly well-drawn multidimensional characters—if they are members of the LGBTQ community—for financing purposes or whatever they would go straight to an A-list straight actor and they would be given that opportunity,” he tells Little Gold Men. “I’m just so grateful that we’re in a time where I would even get to see the script and have an opportunity to play the role.”
Bomer, who came out publicly in 2012, spoke on the podcast about the current status of gay representation in Hollywood, how he got in shape to play the same character over three decades, and what kinds of roles he’s looking for now (“I’m actually kind of hoping to fall on my face now”).
