Falling in Love With Past Lives |
Celine Song was prepared to get her heart broken by Hollywood. The playwright had already decided to leave behind her first love, theater, and had written a screenplay, Past Lives, based closely on her own experiences. But she knew that as a first-time writer and director, the odds were stacked against her. “Who’s going to take a chance on me?” she remembers thinking, as she tells Rebecca Ford on this week’s Little Gold Men podcast.
The answer, it turns out, was A24, which coproduced the film, brought it to Sundance (where it was the undisputed breakout hit of the festival), and releases it in theaters this week. What seemed like a challenging Hollywood journey, Song says, wound up being shockingly simple. “At the end of the day, if it is a story that feels like something that people want to tell…it’s been easy every step of the way to find people who have fallen in love with the script,” she says. “And that’s how I could also convince all my collaborators to trust me and work with me on my very first feature.” |
On this week’s Little Gold Men, Song explains how a trip to an East Village bar with her husband and her childhood sweetheart inspired Past Lives, how she built the chemistry among her three leads (played by Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro), and the honeymoon phase she’s in as a filmmaker. The episode also includes a conversation between David Canfield and Henry Winklerabout the series finale of Barry, which you can read more about here. |
