One Year Ago, Endurance Was Discovered |
One year ago, polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's lost shipwreck Endurance was discovered at the bottom of the Weddell Sea in Antarctica.
Shackleton had entered the Weddell Sea in 1914, despite warnings from whalers on South Georgia that attempting to sail through to the Antarctic mainland would be impossible. As predicted, Endurance was caught in the ice in January 1915.
By October, Shackleton and his men were forced to abandon her as the ice snapped her beams and tore off her rudder. On 21 November 1915, her stern swung into the air and she descended into the black water. Her wreck would be lost for the next hundred years.
In 2022, History Hit joined the historic expedition to document the preparations, voyage, search and ultimate discovery of the wreck itself, taking a deeper look at the history and science behind Shackleton’s Endurance.
"It felt like time travel. It was overwhelming," Dan Snow described the moment the team found the infamous wreck. "As the drone was piloted around the stern of the ship, we got the view we hadn’t dared hope for: the five-pointed star, and above it, the letters spelling out Endurance, still bright gold." |
