Fleishman Is Terrific |
Fleishman Is in Trouble, the best-selling novel by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, is now a surprisingly rich, poignant limited series on FX on Hulu. The show initially centers on nebbishy Manhattan surgeon Toby Fleishman (Jesse Eisenberg) and his imploding marriage to mega-agent Rachel Fleishman (Claire Danes), but Lizzy Caplan’s character, Libby Epstein, gradually turns out to be the real stunner here. Today, Caplan talks to VF’s Joy Press about playing Toby’s old college friend, a former magazine journalist now floundering in suburban stay-at-home-mom exile. As Richard Lawsonwrites in his review, “Perhaps especially those of us (ahem) who are teetering into 40 and have begun to wonder what shape all of our time in the world has taken. When the series really gets thinking on those matters—of irretrievable youth, of life’s narrowing options—it comes close to profound.” |
