A protester in York reportedly just threw eggs at King Charles, and shouted, “This country was built on the blood of slaves,” which prompted some in the crowd to respond with “Shame on you” and “God save the king!” All of which is to say that the royal family, and the new monarch in particular, remain divisive figures that the world can never seem to turn away from. The new season of The Crown is, of course, an excellent place to dig into some backstory, even if Dame Judi Dench most assuredly does not approve. Today, VF’s devoted Crownwatcher, Julie Miller, digs into the true story behind “Tampongate” (if you haven’t heard of it, we’ll let her explain), the life of the Duke of Windsor’s beloved valet Sydney Johnson, and the late queen’s Royal Yacht Britannia. Miller writes that “the complete privacy that the ship afforded is one reason why the queen famously described it as ‘the one place where I can truly relax.’” As King Charles is already discovering, every head that’s worn the crown hangs heavy. |
