A Best-Actress Shake-Up

“Hurry up and wait” could be the slogan for this part of awards season. We rushed to watch all the films that could possibly be in contention, and now we wait to see how it all plays out. I’m Rebecca Ford and over at Awards Insider, we’re keeping track of every Top 10 list released by critics groups and other organizations that may indicate which films are on their way to Oscar nominations, and which ones are losing steam.

This week, the American Film Institute announced its selections for the year’s 10 best films and 10 best TV shows. The best-films list included several best-picture front-runners like King Richard, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story. It also highlighted this season’s latecomers, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, and Don’t Look Up, which have all seen some nice momentum over the past week with buzzy premieres and star-studded Q&As. Dune also made the list, along with Tick, Tick…Boom! And Apple TV+ had an especially strong showing for two of its projects, which have so far been on the bubble: CODA and The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Belfast, which has been a front-runner since the fall festivals, will be honored with an AFI Special Award, which is given to projects that don’t fit AFI eligibility criteria. The award has previously been given to The Artist, Roma, and Parasite—that’s quite a lineup of past Oscar nominees and winners! All the AFI honorees will be celebrated with a private reception at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills on January 7.

Also this week, my colleague David Canfield and I broke down the best-actress race, which has gotten much more interesting in the past couple weeks as Rachel Zegler flew onto the front-runners list with her stunning performance in West Side Story. Read it here to find out if we think Kristen Stewart is still out front and what we think of Nicole Kidman’s chances of possibly earning her fifth Oscar nomination for Being the Ricardos.

Next week will kick off on an interesting note: On Monday morning, the HFPA will host a press conference announcing its nominees for the 2022 Golden Globes. It’s been quite a journey for the organization over the past year (my colleague Joy Press wrote a great piece exploring where it is now, after announcing a series of reforms). In a traditional year, the Globes winners come out before Oscars voting and often help a contender who might have been a bit out of the spotlight (Andra Day from the 2021 event is a good example). My colleague David Canfield will be at the announcement bright and early to report back on what it feels like in the room. As for what kind of boost these nominations might give to the actors and films that receive them? Like many things about this awards season, we’ll have to wait and see.
