The Problem With 30 Rock

“For seven seasons,” Mike Roe writes in HWD today, “30 Rock won the hearts of critics and buckets of Emmys with its absurdist, joke-a-minute style, hyper-specific references, and distinctly female sensibility.” He would know; Roe wrote a book about the series, called The 30 Rock Book, out now. “But since its premiere in 2006, and especially in more recent years,” he continues, “the show—and Tina Fey’s work more broadly, particularly her collaborations with 30 Rock co-showrunner Robert Carlock—has been critiqued for the way it treats race and racism.” What to do with the series in light of all this? Roe explores that very question here

Elsewhere in HWD, Savannah Walsh chats with Elle Fanning and creator Tony McNamara about The Great’s shocking season two finale; Richard Lawson swoons overSteven Spielberg’s West Side Story; Britt Hennemuth gets to know Emily in Paris heartthrob Lucas Bravo; and David Canfield assesses the Oscar chances of Nightmare Alley, a late-breaking entry into this year’s race.
