Viva West Side Story
Last night, last night, New York hosted the premiere of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story—a lavish musical that has immediately begun shaking up the Oscars race. The team behind V.F.’s Awards Insider vertical says as much with the headline of their assessment of the film’s odds: “Is West Side Story the New Best-Picture Front-Runner?” Here, Katey Richsums up their thoughts: “Though I’ve learned my lesson about making breathless, excited predictions immediately after a screening, I do think it handily silenced the skeptics who wondered whether we even needed another West Side Story. With cleverly reimagined musical numbers and a huge number of standout performances (Mike Faist as Riff was my personal favorite), it makes the case for updating a classic simply because, well, you can.”
Elsewhere at the West Side Story premiere, Spielberg paid homage to his late collaborator and friend, Stephen Sondheim. And elsewhere in HWD, the Gucci family speaks out againstHouse of Gucci; The Lost Daughter cleans up at the Gotham Awards; and Maggie Coughlan catches up with Susie Essman, whose Curb Your Enthusiasm style reaches ridiculous new heights this season.
