The Best of 2021
It’s time for another cherished December tradition: anointing the best films and television series of the year, as chosen by Vanity Fair critics Richard Lawson and Sonia Saraiya. Both celebrate a variety of projects and genres—though, of course, each can only select one for their list’s number one spot. For Lawson, that honor goes to a Norwegian festival stunner that “is, at root, about that most vexing and essential thing: the present tense.” For Saraiya, it’s an HBO juggernaut still firing on all cylinders in its third season, “an indispensable fixture of the landscape—a balm that makes the widening wealth gap humorous instead of, you know, a harbinger of the end of days.” What did they pick? Find Lawson’s list here, and Saraiya’s here.
Elsewhere in HWD, Donald Liebenson catches up with the indefatigable Mel Brooks on the occasion of the EGOT’s new memoir release; Jordan Hoffman talks smooth jazz with Kenny G, the subject of a fittingly entertaining new documentary; and Ariel Kanter recommends the best gifts for the Schitt’s Creek fanatic in your life.
