THE LATEST ON HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST RACES

OCTOBER 22, 2021

Reading the Awards Season Tea Leaves Thus Far

Well, there are 156 days until the 2022 Academy Awards, so that seems like as good a time as any to start figuring out who might win this year. Ever since the fall festivals kicked off, Hollywood has been gabbing about which films are landing, which are disappointing, and the actors who may be on their way to collecting a gold statuette.

I’m Rebecca Ford, although feel free to call me Miss Cleo this week because, along with my Awards Insider colleague David Canfield, we’re reading the tea leaves on the shape of the Oscar race in our latest piece. While I’d love to claim that we figure this all out by waving our hands over a crystal ball, what actually goes into these prediction posts is a lot of watching films and then even more talking to insiders, voters, and other sources in the industry about how things are shaping up.

It can be tough to predict what could still be earning the most buzz in a few weeks or months. And every week, there’s another event or screening or awards show that seems to shake up the landscape a bit. For example, Thursday’s Gotham Awards announcement—the first major awards list of the season—seemed to give a nice boost to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter, and Rebecca Hall’s Passing, which both earned five nominations. But because nominees are required to have a budget of under $35 million, several of this year’s major contenders were ineligible. Still, some of the talent behind those films will also be honored with tributes, including The Power of the Dog director Jane Campion, Spencer star Kristen Stewart, and the cast of The Harder They Fall.

Speaking of The Harder They Fall, Richard Lawson’s new review praises the cast’s killer performances, and David Canfield profiled one of those cowboys—Idris Elba, who revealed the inspirations behind his memorable baddie. The Harder They Fall is a great example of a film that seems to be a bit on the bubble right now when it comes to awards, but, depending on its path moving forward, could rise up our rankings, especially in the performance categories. So, basically what I’m saying is that things can change very quickly in this race—but we’ll be sure to keep you covered on every moment.
