Today, V.F. delivers a riveting excerpt from the new book Bad Motherfucker: The Life and Movies of Samuel L. Jackson, the Coolest Man in Hollywood. Author Gavin Edwards spoke to Jackson about the beloved actor’s struggle with drugs early in his career, and his road back to make Jungle Fever with Spike Lee: “Skinny and detoxing, he very much looked the part of a strung-out addict—so much so that his first day of shooting, when he went to the craft services table to get something to eat, security guards tried to chase him away, thinking that he was a local crackhead.”
