Magic Man
Derek DelGaudio performed his extraordinary, nearly indescribable magic show, In & Of Itself, 560 times in New York and Los Angeles, often in front of an audience of rapt bold-faced names. Stephen Colbert, for one, was so captivated that he coproduced a film version, which debuts on Hulu on Friday. As Devin Gordon writes in his interview with DelGaudio, “We’ve been conditioned to believe that stage magic means deception, keeping secrets—but In & Of Itself is a radical attempt to teach us the opposite.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Kenzie Bryant writes about the revitalized Hollywood gossip industry; V.F.’s Old Hollywood Book Club delves into the life of the legendary Eartha Kitt; our Little Gold Men awards team talks to the eminently deserving actors Kingsley Ben-Adir and Nicole Beharie; and our chief critic, Richard Lawson, moderates Netflix’s Real to Reel showcase with documentary filmmakers who’ve just made riveting work.
