Whitney Houston Releases Hit-Filled Second Album

1987
Whitney Houston's second album, Whitney, is released. It contains four #1 hits, including the enduring "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)."
Houston's debut, Whitney Houston, made her a superstar, a title the 23-year-old singer secures on her sophomore effort. It contains four #1 hits, each composed by a different set of songwriters: "So Emotional" - Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, the team that wrote "Like A Virgin" for Madonna and "True Colors" for Cyndi Lauper. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" - Written by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, who record as Boy Meets Girl. They wrote Houston's earlier hit, "How Will I Know." "Didn't We Almost Have It All" - Written by Michael Masser and the lyricist Will Jennings, who later writes the words for the titanic hit "My Heart Will Go On." "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" - Written by the soul singer Chuck Jackson and Broadway composer Frank Wildhorn. Like her debut, Whitney is produced by Narada Michael Walden, performed by a team of top session musicians, and released with Arista Records' promotional machine behind it (Arista head Clive Davis champions Houston wholeheartedly). The results are similar: #1 in most territories and worldwide sales estimated at 20 million.
