On September 24,1789, the Judiciary Act of 1789 is passed by Congress and signed by President George Washington. The act established the Supreme Court of the United States. At the time, there were six justices who were appointed until death or retirement. Once the act was passed, Washington named John Jay to be chief justice. He was joined by John Rutledge, William Cushing, John Blair, Robert Harrison, and James Wilson.
