On March 5, 1836, Samuel Colt receives a patent for the first production-model revolver, a .34-caliber weapon. Colt never claims to have invented the revolver, but his use of interchangeable parts places him at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution because he is one of the first to use the assembly line efficiently. The patent gives Colt a US monopoly on the manufacturing of revolvers for the next decade. At the time of his death in 1862, Colt is one of the richest men in the country. Not everyone on the South Side of Chicago is sold on having the Obama Presidential Center in the neighborhood. The 21-acre campus in Jackson Park would include a variety of spaces for community use surrounding a large tower, which would house the Obama Presidential Museum. But 200 professors at the University of Chicago, where Obama once worked, have denounced the project’s location. And at least one of them, who considers himself an Obama friend, says the former president is ‘tone deaf’ on the subject.
