- What happened? As much as a foot of rain fell late Tuesday in and around Valencia in eastern Spain. Some places got a year’s worth of rain in a few hours.
- The damage: The water swept away cars, flooded homes and destroyed a bridge. The death toll may rise as authorities continue rescue efforts.

- What is that? The name “Hickman” etched into a wall, possibly referring to a man who once owned the house. But it’s upside-down, which was thought to curse the named person.
- It wasn’t the only haunting find: Ritual protection marks, known as “witches marks,” were also discovered in Gainsborough Old Hall, which has had a tumultuous history.
