Deconstructing Woody

Thirty years ago, Woody Allen was so adored by the press that he had a virtual stranglehold on coverage of the sexual-molestation allegations against him, while his former partner, Mia Farrow, was largely dismissed as an unreliable eccentric. It was Maureen Orth’s investigation for Vanity Fair that broke the cycle. Today, Orth looks back on reporting a pivotal piece—and the storm that followed: “My story became front-page news, and Team Woody’s strategy was to wield the threat of a libel lawsuit early and often.”

Elsewhere in HWD, Karen Valby talks to Leslie Jones about the Coming to America sequel; V.F. debuts Andra Day’s new Billie Holiday and Angela Davis–inspired music video; and Richard Lawson unpacks the WandaVision finale, as well Vanessa Kirby’s new dramaThe World to Come.
